Hey CloudReady Fans!

The Neverware team is very excited to promote our latest release v57.2 on the Stable channel (and available on all channels). If you're interested, subscribe to the Stable, Beta or Dev channel for your OtA update.

Release Notes for v57.2:

  • OS Upgrade to 57
  • Transition from X11 to Freon graphics stack
  • CloudReady Logs - to better troubleshoot machine-specific problems, we are launching a new tool to gather logs from our users. Check out chrome://cloudready-logs/ - we're offering the chance for users to 1) describe their problem to us and 2) send us the logs or download them yourself. The goal behind this feature is to tighten the feedback loop between us and customers experiencing issues. If we can better understand your problem and your hardware setup, we can better reproduce and more quickly resolve any graphics, wifi or other high priority problems.
  • [UPDATE] Bug fix for graphics glitches on some Intel HD machines CFV-66

Known Issues

[UPDATE] Touchscreen functionality

  • Quite a few users are reporting a loss of touchscreen functionality with the v57 release. Unfortunately, this is an unexpected consequence of the transition to Freon. While we do not explicitly promise touchscreen capabilities in CloudReady, we are never a fan of dropping functionality. So we will investigate the loss of touchscreen capabilities in future development cycles, but we do not have a solution right now. We hope you'll stick with us and continue to check back in on future CloudReady releases. We will certainly let you know when we think we've got it figured out.

Some background on the development and release of v57

Releasing v57 created a challenge for us because it obviously took longer than we like to get it out the door. We were working on a large backend change, converting the graphics backend from X to Freon. The benefits of transitioning from X to Freon for users are great - check out this article or this one to read more details. During our initial testing, we came across no significant graphics issues, but we did see problems with touchpads. The development solution required leveraging two different libraries: libgestures & libinput to handle touchpad commands. This is a situation where the CloudReady solution diverges from Chromebooks development - all Chromebooks support libgestures, but we support older hardware which responded to libinput, not libgestures.

As a consequence, we have noticed that some of the older hardware that supported more advanced touch commands do not register with the libinput library. So while we are delivering better performance with the Freon change, we may compromise on some touchpad gestures on some machines.

To provide a little more context on what we look for when we're testing touchpads - below is the high level list of our touchpad test plan:

  • Touchpad is responsive
  • Ability to left-click & right-click
  • Scrolling
  • Touchpad Settings can be enabled & respected (tap-to-click, Australian scrolling, etc.)

Using this guidance of requirements, we are allowing for some changes in behavior on machines. The best example is 1-click, right-click functionality. The requirement is the ability to right-click. So if the machine allowed for the ability to right-click via 2 finger tap, then the machine was a pass. This created the scenario where some machines that allowed 1-click, right-click in previous versions, but did not function in v57 the same way, still passed our QA testing because right-click is available using 2 finger tap.

With this framework of touchpad functionality requirements, our QA team tested 150 certified machines to verify acceptable working standards and identify those machines with behavior changes. Below is a list of known functionality changes and the machines impacted.
